In the age of social distancing, babies are named X Æ A-12, brands are racing to find to creative solutions, from digital fashion weeks to online art galleries in lieu of physical catwalks and exhibition spaces, and the beauty world isn’t about to be left behind.
MAC Cosmetics has introduced a Virtual Try-On feature in partnership with YouCam – best known for its photo editing apps – which lets us swatch products on ourselves via pictures and live videos – all before making a purchase. Using YouCam’s augmented reality technology, the feature creates realistic simulations that can be tested on any skin tone and adapted to different textures, mattes, sheens, glosses, with a choice of more than 200 shades of lip or eye colours.
“As pioneers in digital innovation, we understand that there is no better way to connect with our consumers than through a convenient, personalised online shopping experience,” announced Ukonwa Ojo, Global Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President, Global Marketing, MAC Cosmetics. “Through our Virtual Try-On feature, we’re able to bring a quintessential element of the in-store experience right to our consumers’ homes.”
Virtual reality isn’t new for MAC, however. The beloved label started testing augmented reality technology in 2017 by installing virtual try-on mirrors in select stores. Today, it has more than 120 stores globally equipped with virtual try-on mirrors, which leverage facial and 3D video makeup rendering technology to create a curated set of MAC shades and looks in an instant.
Perfect Corp. Founder and CEO, Alice Chang added, “We believe our YouCam Makeup AI and AR technology has revolutionised how consumers discover, try and buy beauty. MAC continues to lead the industry in this critical area and we are thrilled to partner with them to make this virtual-try on offering even more accessible to consumers who are socially distancing at home.”
To get started, visit MAC’s Virtual Try On page and simply pick a product to sample. Then, enable your live camera or upload a photo of yourself. Don’t worry, though, if it seems intimidating: you could also upload a photo of a model as an alternative. From there, you can channel your inner beauty guru and swatch away like a pro. Similarly to stores, a MAC artist will be available to chat live if you need any further assistance.
Do we have time to give ourselves a virtual MAC makeover before our next Zoom call? We think so.

Top places to get a makeover (On-the-cheap)
As you will see soon, I’m going to post an interactive map for you to decide where the best place for you is. The map will be based on the Cherry Hill-Moorestown area, and possibly the Deptford Mall area. Stay tuned!
But, until then, I’ll post my weekly top-? list. This week’s topic? Makeovers, of course.
1) Ulta
Ulta is a great place to get a makeover, as many locations have a salon right inside. Depending on where you go (I’m basing my prices by the one located in Mt. Laurel, NJ), the prices and services vary.
– the location in Mt. Laurel has not only a hair salon, but also a place to get your makeup done. A basic shampoo and style costs about $30, and makeup application costs about $30 as well. This is a great place to go to if you have a special occasion coming up, such as a wedding or prom. They also have different kinds of beauty treatments as well, starting at about $30.
2) MAC
Of course, you knew this was going to end up on here. Now, from knowing a couple people who have gotten makeovers done here, I pretty much have an idea on what you have to do. Like any other salon, you have to make an appointment, or I believe they take walk-ins as well. The actual cost of the makeover is free, but of course a tip is only appropriate, and they require you to buy at least one item that they used on you. It’s not a bad deal, especially if you like what they did.
3) Sephora
Now, this one is iffy. I have a friend that works at Sephora, but she hasn’t been working there long, so I’m not sure how it works. But, like MAC and Ulta, you can get them. You can visit your local Sephora and check out how it works. I believe it’s like MAC, as in you don’t get charged for the actual makeover (except tip, if you wish), but you have to buy at least one product they used on you. If not, than it shouldn’t be more than $30-40.
Now, I’m not counting this as a top spot, but it’s always a possibility. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of a mall/shopping area, as pretty much every location of the three stores above is around a mall, you can always check out your local salon. Many salons double as a hair and nail salon, and also do other beauty services.
